2024 European Elections: Germany National Results

Seats by National Party and Political Group

The 2024 European Parliament election in Germany resulted in a significant shift in the balance of power, with gains for right-wing parties and losses for centrist and left-wing parties.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the largest party in the outgoing parliament, lost seats but remained the largest party with 23.5% of the vote and 34 seats. The Social Democratic Party (SPD), the junior partner in the outgoing government, also lost seats, falling to 20.5% of the vote and 29 seats.

The big winners of the election were the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the nationalist Free Democratic Party (FDP). The AfD, which has a strong anti-immigrant and anti-EU agenda, increased its share of the vote from 12.6% to 18.5%, winning 26 seats. The FDP, which has a more pro-business and pro-EU stance, also made gains, increasing its share of the vote from 10.7% to 14.5% and winning 20 seats.

The Greens, a centrist party with a focus on environmental protection, lost seats but remained the fourth-largest party in the parliament with 12.5% of the vote and 18 seats. The Left Party, a leftist party with a focus on social justice and equality, also lost seats and fell to 9.5% of the vote and 13 seats.

Implications for German Politics

The results of the election have significant implications for German politics. The gains made by the AfD and the FDP could make it more difficult for Chancellor Angela Merkel to form a stable government. The AfD's strong performance could also embolden other right-wing parties in Europe.

The losses suffered by the CDU and the SPD could also lead to a shift in the balance of power within the German government. The CDU and the SPD have been the two dominant parties in German politics for decades, but their combined share of the vote has now fallen below 50%. This could make it more difficult for them to form a stable government and could lead to a more fragmented political landscape in Germany.
